Internal Geography and the Effect of Imports on Non-Homothetic Consumption Patterns within the U.S

چکیده
It is known that rich households purchase goods of higher prices and quality than the poor ones. In this paper, we show that this difference is systematically related to the variation in access to imports across states within the U.S. Specifically, we investigate to what degree imports affect the differences in prices of durables purchased by households across income distribution. Our identification of exogenous variation in imports relies on differences in the internal distance of imports across states and products. We find that (1) the differences in purchase prices of durables between rich and poor households are more pronounced in states that receive more imports and (2) those differences are driven by the effect of imports on the poor, not the rich, households. Both findings are consistent with the predictions of a novel model that combines non-homothetic preferences with specific transportation costs. ∗Department of Economics, Indiana University, Wylie Hall Rm 301, 100 S. Reducing the U.S dependency on oil and gas imports, implications for its policies in the international system
This paper aims to firstly explain the significance of the U.S oil independency and its consequences on the U.S foreign strategy in international politics. Secondly, the implications of this energy policy on the U.S foreign policy in the international system context is examined. The hypothesis to address these inquiries is postulated using neo-realism theory. Accordingly, following oil independ...
متن کاملGeography of Export Prices and Importer-Exporter Income Differences
We develop a model of endogenous quality choice and trade that combines non-iceberg trade costs and non-homothetic preferences to capture the effect of importer-exporter income differences on geographic variation in quality and export prices. The differences in income substantially alter the effect of trade costs on quality. The incentive to trade high quality goods given high trade costs (the ...
متن کاملThe Role of Intermediate and Capital Goods Imports in Non-Oil Exports in OPEC Countries: Spatial Dynamic Panel Data Approach
One of the issues discussed in the international economics literature is the type and amount of imported goods. The main reason for these disputes is the negative impact of imports on the domestic economy. On the other hand, some experts believe that there are some types of import that do not lead to increase the dependency and not reduce the sustainable development of the importing country. Th...
متن کاملThe Effects of Devaluation of Irans Balance of Payments
Devaluation has different effects on the structure of trade patterns in countries which have a fixed exchange rate regime. The experience of devaluation in many countries has clearly shown that devaluation policies have not always led to the improvement of their trade pattern structures. Some empirical studies have revealed that after employing devaluation, the real rate of money in some nation...
متن کامل08 Effects of the Import of Consumption, Intermediate and Capital Goods on Transmission of Crude Oil Price Volatility to the Industry and Mining Sector in Iran
In this research, the DCC model is estimated to calculate dynamic correlation series between crude oil price and growth of Industry and Mine sector during 1367:1-1392:4. Then, Macroeconomic variables which can explain the dynamic correlation are analyzed as variables of contagion. So, the import, as an effective and affected variable from crude oil price, is separated to real import of consumpt...
